In 1998, my entire world turned upside down when my former wife said the words, “I want a divorce.” It caught me by complete surprise because I thought everything was great. I had retired from the U.S. Army a few months before and was in Law School at Ole Miss. When I asked her what was going on and why she wanted a divorce, her reply was, “I’m not happy!” A week or so later, she moved from our home into an apartment.
I was confused and hurt, and something didn’t add up about this sudden desire to end our marriage. I asked a friend to give me a ride to the apartment complex. A few hours later, I learned that “I’m not happy” actually meant “I am having an affair.” Over the next few weeks, I gathered more information, took more pictures and videos, and collected details about her new friend. I put together a report and scheduled a meeting with my attorney. During that meeting, he looked at me and said, “You are good at this.” He continued, “I have a few clients who need someone like you to help them.”
So, with a borrowed camera, a commitment to excellence, and a sincere desire to help people, I started a Private Investigation Company. The people I wanted to help were those who suspected their spouse of cheating or had a legitimate concern for the well-being of their children requiring a change in custody.
Service to others began in my family with my father, who was a minister for 49 years. He believed in and instilled in me the desire to help people in their time of need. The U.S. Army taught me how to lead, take care of business, set realistic expectations, operate using unconventional methods to collect information, never give up, and understand the value of integrity. My divorce and eventual pursuit of custody of my children required 100 percent of my attention, leading me to give up my dream of practicing law. However, what I learned in the one and a half years I was there provided me with an understanding of how our court system works, what evidence is relevant, and how to present our findings while testifying in court.
